I recently had a piano tuning job on the Northshore that I won’t soon forget.
When I arrived at the property there was an old iron gate. The lady owner came to open it for me, arriving in a golf cart. She invited me to follow her in.
What followed was one of the most beautiful drives I have ever taken to a piano tuning appointment.
We wound through magnificent trees and woodland. We passed several small buildings with workers going about their day on golf carts. We stopped at a barn where she proudly showed me her chickens and her goats.
Then we drove on.
Finally we arrived at the main house — a magnificent plantation home dating back to the 1800s, surrounded by grand oak trees that seemed to have been standing since the house was built. Inside was a beautiful Steinway grand piano waiting to be tuned.
I tuned and cleaned it up thoroughly. When I finished I stepped out onto the grand porch. More magnificent oaks. A peaceful pond stretching out before me.
It was an extraordinary place.
From the iron gate to the front door was a mile of winding road.
This is one of the great privileges of being a piano tuner on the Northshore — you never quite know what’s waiting at the end of the driveway.
